Hodgson backing Torres to 'explode'

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is backing a "fitter" and "stronger" Fernando Torres to put a nightmare first half of the season behind him, declaring that the striker is about to "explode".

image

The Spaniard has endured a torrid five months, finding the net five times in 18 appearances. Torres' form looked to have turned the corner in November when his terrific double handed Liverpool an encouraging win over Chelsea but the 26-year-old is without a goal in four games.

However, Hodgson, who has always backed his star striker, expects the Spain international to return to the form that made him one of the most feared forwards in Europe.

"Fernando is getting stronger, fitter and more confident," he said in The Sun. "All he needs is a goal or two and then he'll explode.

"I watch him in training every day and he works very hard, but he's a front player and they play on unbelievably tight margins. All he needs is a couple of goals or a couple of good performances and you will see the Fernando Torres of old."

Liverpool host Wolves on Wednesday and Hodgson admitted he is excited by the prospect of skipper Steven Gerrard returning from a hamstring injury.

He said: "It is harder to find leaders in the world of football today. Steven helps all the players and you think of the great teams of the past and their leaders jump out at you."

Inter Milan Prepare £45m Summer Move for Liverpool Striker Fernando Torres

New Inter Milan boss Leonardo has earmarked a summer move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres as he seeks to freshen things up at the San Siro. The Brazilian manager is hoping to lure the Spaniard to the treble holders with the promise of being able to challenge for major honours, something the 26 year old has not been able to do at both Anfield or his previous employers at Atletico Madrid.
The usually prolific striker has had a subdued season thus far managing five goals from 16 Premier League starts as his Liverpool side continue to struggle for form. Whilst Torres is clearly a player with a great deal of affinity with the Merseyside club, if he fails to cement Champions League football for a second season running then he may well consider his options.
Massimo Moratti has stated that he will not fund big money moves in January, a standpoint that ultimately cost Rafa Benitez the sack, the Inter President will open his cheque book in the summer if he feels it is necessary.
Given that Diego Milito is now 31 and Samuel Eto’o is 29, a move for fresh striking options makes a great deal of sense but it will take a very big offer to land the £45m rated striker.

Boss hails Torres

Roy Hodgson hailed the performance of Fernando Torres against Bolton.

Torres showed glimpses of his top form against Bolton, especially with his well taken equaliser. His all round game was also pleasing for the boss. "The first goal was satisfying not least of all because it was set up by Gerrard and finished by Torres - two players who are going to be very important for us between now and the end of the season," said Hodgson. "It was nice to see Fernando get a goal after playing so well. The Fernando we saw today and the Fernando we saw on Wednesday were totally different. "I think we'll see Fernando in that type of form from now until the end of the season if we can get him recovered in time with all these games within three days of each other. That's our major fear for him. "You've got to remember that front players play with such a small margin from great success to not having a very good game. "Today his workrate, effort, discipline and determination were first class. I saw today what I'm sure you who have been following Liverpool for many years have seen on many occasions - a player who's world class."

Kenny Dalglish hails Fernando Torres & Raul Meireles

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish praised Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles after his side's 3-0 win at Wolves.

Striker Torres scored twice while midfielder Meireles set up one of his goals and also scored with a spectacular 25-yard volley.

"It is the best [Torres has played] since I've come in," said Dalglish. "It was not just his goals it was the workrate he put in."

He added: "[Meireles] played very well but I thought everybody played well."

The win was the first Dalglish has achieved in four games since returning to manage the club and the Scot believes it came as a reward for the hard work the players put in.

"It feels good to me [getting the victory] and is nothing short of what the players deserve," added Dalglish. "Their application and determination to earn a result was fantastic.

"They had to earn the right to play against a very good side and they did that. We couldn't have asked for any more from the players. Apart from the three goals, it is a clean sheet as well and that is important for everybody.

"The important thing is the win will give the players the confidence and belief. It will make them realise that they have to work hard to get anywhere and they have got it in their locker to do that."

The Reds have been linked with moves for Ajax striker Luis Suarez and, although the Dutch club's boss Frank de Boer does not want any deal to drag on, Dalglish was remaining tight-lipped.

"We won't let Luis go on 31 January at 23.55," De Boer told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. "It's logical and a deal which I made with Rik van den Boog [Ajax general director].

"To replace Suarez will be difficult, but we are ready. We have a Plan B, we know what we want if he leaves."

Liverpool have also had a £4m bid rejected for Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam.

But Dalglish said: "The owners are very supportive and we can bring players in if we find them but the most important thing is to bring in players who can improve us.

"Also we have a huge responsibility to do it responsibly. We are not going to comment on any individual player at any club, we prefer to tell you when we have got something to tell you.

"I don't think it is fair for us to comment on what is going on or speculate. We can bring players in if we want to and it does not depend on people going out.

"There is no sum of money because that would be stupid but if we need something then it is there."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy believes Liverpool are a different side since his side beat them at Anfield on 29 December when Roy Hodgson, who has since been replaced by Dalglish, was the Reds boss.

"We beat them when Roy was there. He is such a great guy and a top coach but it is Kenny Dalglish coming out of the stand," said McCarthy.

"I think he is enjoying a support and a warmth Roy didn't. He has garnered and nutured that and they are on a better roll than they were because of it."

McCarthy was left to rue a defensive mistake for giving Liverpool the upper hand as Wolves remain in the bottom three.

He added: "I think we let them off the hook by trying to play offside after 30-odd minutes.

"We then got done by a wonder-strike which no-one is stopping - you could have put two goalkeepers in.

"The third one is incidental because the game was finished - two mistakes and a wonder strike."

Boss delight at Torres form

Kenny Dalglish today praised the form of Fernando Torres - but revealed how he hopes the Spaniard's best is still yet to come.

Torres struck twice in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux to take his tally for the season so far to nine in the Barclays Premier League and leave the boss delighted with his contribution.

"Certainly since I have come in here he has been nothing short of fantastic for us in the way he has applied himself in training and on the pitch," Dalglish told reporters at Melwood.

"Apart from his goals, he's worked tirelessly upfront to try and help us. I can only - and will only - assess what he's done since we've come in, and we've been absolutely delighted with him and the other players as well."

Dalglish believes Torres's form is indicative of the current mood amongst the squad.

And the manager is pleased with the determination and unity his players have displayed in attempting to raise their performances.

He added: "I hope his (Torres's) best is yet to come.

"We've done training the way we think training should be done. There has never been any doubt about many of the player's abilities here and there wasn't any doubt that they weren't doing as well as they were capable of doing.

"Fernando comes into the same bracket as many others - that they're doing better now than they were before and more like their old selves than they were before, which is a great credit to them.

"When things aren't going as well as they could do for a football club and for individuals, it's very difficult to turn it around - but they've turned it around and it's great credit to them."

Dalglish continued: "As I've said before, we stick as one. We need their (the fans) help at times and we've got to help them at times. If we go forward together, we should be alright.

"Together, we will move forward - as individuals we won't get anywhere, so we'll stick together as a unit and will concentrate on our football club and see what benefit that brings us."

Dalglish: “Torres has been nothing short of fantastic for us”

The Liverpool number ‘9’ has found the back of the net three times in three Premier League matches under Kenny Dalglish. His strikes and performances have earned the Spaniard rave reviews from press, and on Monday it was the turn of the new Anfield boss to show his delight with Torres’ contribution.

“Certainly since I have come in here he has been nothing short of fantastic for us in the way he has applied himself in training and on the pitch. Apart from his goals, he's worked tirelessly upfront to try and help us. I can only - and will only - assess what he's done since we've come in, and we've been absolutely delighted with him and the other players as well.”

The Anfield manager is pleased with the effort, determination and hard work of Fernando and the rest of his squad players. And now Dalglish hopes that his side can build on their win away to Wolves as the Reds look to continue their climb up the Premier League table. “Fernando comes into the same bracket as many others - that they're doing better now than they were before and more like their old selves than they were before, which is a great credit to them. When things aren't going as well as they could do for a football club and for individuals, it's very difficult to turn it around - but they've turned it around and it's great credit to them.”

Liverpool FC: Fernando Torres' best yet to come, believes Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish believes Liverpool have yet to see the best of Fernando Torres.

A brace in Saturday's win over Wolves has seen the Spain international starting to return to the form which earned him a legion of followers at Anfield, after a relatively muted half-season in front of goal under Dalglish's predecessor, Roy Hodgson.

And ahead of tomorrow's visit of Fulham, the Kop boss paid tribute to Torres' "fantastic" work rate but feels that there is still room for improvement in the striker's game.

"I hope his best is yet to come," said Dalglish.

"I think Fernando comes into the same bracket as many others that are doing better now than they were before and are more like their old selves, which is a great credit to them.

"When things aren't going well as what they could do for a club and individuals, it's very difficult to turn that round, but they've turned it round and it's a great credit to them."

He added: "Certainly, since I've come in here, he's been nothing short of fantastic for us in the way he's applied himself in training and on the pitch.

"And apart from his goals, he's worked tirelessly up front to try and help us so I can and will only assess what he's done since I've come in.

"I've been absolutely delighted with him and a load of other players as well."

Liverpool out for back-to-back wins in rearranged Fulham clash

The Reds will aim to build on their recent win at Molineux when Fulham visit Merseyside on Wednesday, kick-off at 20:00 hours (GMT). The rearranged match at home to the Londoners was originally scheduled for December 18, but bad weather led to the game being postponed along with several other Premier League fixtures.

Fernando Torres, who grabbed his eighth and ninth goal of the season in the 3-0 win against Wolves, will be targeting double figures for the campaign against the Cottagers. On Saturday, the Liverpool number ‘9’ broke the deadlock against Wolves before rounding the afternoon’s scoring off with the third of the afternoon in added time.

The Spaniard scored for Liverpool in his last outing against Fulham. Back in October 2009 the striker equalised for the visitor’s on 42 minutes with an instinctive volley from outside the box to cancel out a Bobby Zamora strike. But second-half goals from Nevland and Dempsey condemned the Reds to a 3-1 defeat.

For Wednesday’s game Kenny Dalglish will have Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard back after the midfielder finished serving a three-match suspension for his sending off against Man U in the FA Cup. The Liverpool boss however will still be without the injured Jamie Carragher who remains on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

Mark Hughes will still be without Briggs, Senderos and Zamora, all out injured. The Fulham boss will also have to make do without his first choice keeper as Schwarzer is away on international duty at the Asia Cup. However reserve goalkeeper David Stockdale has performed very well for the Londoners when called upon. As a matter of fact, his side has yet to lose in any of his eight appearances this season.

The Cottagers go into the midweek clash four points above the relegation zone and three points off Liverpool. Fulham have yet to beat Liverpool at Anfield in 29 attempts and this season the West Londoners have won just once on the road away to Stoke City at the end of December.

Although Liverpool head into the weekend fixture in eleventh place in the Premier League, the Reds are just two points off seventh place. The fourth Champions League spot is currently occupied by Chelsea who are twelve points above the Merseysiders.

Luis Suarez To Liverpool Is First Step In Fernando Torres Leaving Next Summer

Liverpool FC is closing in on the signature of the Ajax centre forward Luis Suarez. However, the signing immediately begs two questions:

1) Why sign Suarez when the rest of team needs undoubted strengthening? And maybe more importantly,

2) Does Suarez coming in speed up the departure of Fernando Torres?

There is little doubt that this campaign has been one of the worst Liverpool fans or players have ever had to endure.

Roy Hodgson was brought into the club last July by Christian Purslow and was immediately hailed as the man to steady the sinking ship, but the truth worked out far differently than either man could imagine.

Hodgson was meant to come in, sweep the carpets clean, and give the club the appearance of being on a sound footing as Martin Broughton and Purslow looked to bring new owners in.

His steady approach, after the scattershot transfer dealings of Rafael Benitez, was seen as the way to get the club back on track and although a top four finish was the very most Liverpool fans expected, a season of improvement on and off the pitch was the very least Hodgson had to produce.

Instead, Hodgson's campaign stuttered from the start and after just 31 games in charge of the Reds, as Liverpool slipped towards the relegation zone, with a record reading W-13 D-9 L-9 the likable manager found himself heading towards the growing dole queues in Croydon.

Hodgson's biggest mistake at Anfield was in alienating the Liverpool fan base and The Kop in particular. He had umpteen chances to stake his claim with the Anfield faithful but he bungled every single one.

From refusing to take Fabio Capello up with playing Steven Gerrard for 90 minutes when the Liverpool captain should have only played for 45 minutes while on England duty (Manchester United’s and Chelsea’s players only played for 45) to taking a diplomatic stance when Sir Alex Ferguson accused Fernando Torres of trying to get John O'Shea sent off, Hodgson just did not know how to act as a manager of a big club.

There is an old saying in the workplace. A man may have been working for 35 years but if he has done the same thing every year, then he doesn’t have 35 years worth of experience he just has one.

This would seem to be the case with Hodgson at Liverpool. He just seemed out of his depth and did not know what to do from day one.

After looking for the job last summer when he did not like any of the managers he was profiling, including Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish has been given the job to right the good ship Liverpool.

In just three games there has been enough improvement in the team to suggest that, instead of fighting it out in the lower reaches of the league, Liverpool could indeed mount a challenge to finish in the European spots.

The Scot has a tough task ahead, because there can be little doubt that the current squad needs improving.

There are glaring holes all over the first team squad. Quite simply there are far too many players not of Liverpool quality currently residing in red shirts and it says much that, for a long time, the two best players under Roy Hodgson were probably Sotirios Krygiakos and Lucas Leivia.

The ex-Fulham boss did not enamour himself to Liverpool fans with his summer signings or tactics but it must be said that the new additions were just like adding water to an already burning oil fire.

Now as we pass the halfway point of the season, NESV look set to prove to Liverpool fans that they mean business and that LFC is still a big club.

To send this message out to the fans, Damien Comolli has contacted Ajax about the availability of Luis Suarez.

Currently the negotiations between the two clubs are about £8 million apart, with Liverpool valuing the striker at around £15 million while Ajax want an estimated £23 million for the 23-year-old.

Suarez is one of the most sought-after players in world football at the moment. Barcelona and Manchester United both sent scouts to assess him last season when he bagged 49 goals in 48 games.

His overall record at Ajax is impressive. Over the last four years, he has never failed to score fewer than 20 goals a season, and his current record reads as having played 154 games with 110 goals.

Rumour of his impending transfer from Ajax went into overdrive two weeks ago when Ajax announced that Suarez was being removed as captain of the club and from there he has been linked with various clubs like Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool.

While there is no doubting his class or his potential, one must have to question the reasoning behind signing such a player for so much money, especially as the rest of the squad needs strengthening.

Stephen Warnock and Charlie Adam have both been linked with the club in recent days and would be welcome additions to the changing room, but that still leaves the glaring holes at centre half, central midfield, and out wide.

Of course, Liverpool definitely needs to sign a centre forward. Neglecting to bring in a player who could replace Fernando Torres was one of the prime reasons for both Rafael Benitez and Roy Hodgson getting sacked, but it seems madness to sign a player of £20 million type calibre unless he is going to play all the time.

The main problem there is that both Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez operate primarily as lone strikers for their respective teams.

Torres has been at Liverpool since 2007 and has never played with a real partner, unless you count Steven Gerrard playing just behind him.

Rafael Benitez is one of the most astute tactical managers in the game and even he failed to find a strike partner for the Liverpool No. 9.

Gerrard's best position is as the supporting midfielder, so if Suarez does come in, then Liverpool will gain in one area but lose in the other. Gerrard would revert to a traditional central midfielder when he simply does not know how to dictate a game from deep.

The other option for Liverpool on Suarez is to utilise him with Torres in the same way that Peter Beardsley complemented John Aldridge in Dalglish's first stint at Liverpool in the late '80s.

The problems with that particular tactic are that Torres' link up play is not up to the same class as his finishing and that he is a player who plays his best football when facing the goal rather than away from it.

It is also worth noting that John Aldridge was sold by Dalglish while he was still at his peak...

No, the Suarez signing only makes sense, to me anyway, on two levels.

1) He is a big-money signing that will get the fans back on board and,

2) His signing is the first part in Torres' future transfer.

The latter statement makes particular sense when you realise that Pere Guardiola is Pep Guardiola's brother as well as being Luis Suarez's agent.

It is no secret that Barcelona have indicated that they want to bring Torres and Fabregas back to Spain next season and Suarez's signing follows NESV's ideal by bringing in a player with vast potential while selling another at what could be his peak value.

If Suarez does indeed come in, he would be too valuable to leave on the bench so it would look as if Dalglish will be employing a 4-4-2 type system for the rest of the season with Steven Gerrard and possibly Charlie Adam as his two main central midfielders.

The problem with that set up is that it leaves the two centre halves exposed.

One would have to assume that since Martin Kelly is commanding the right full berth that Dalglish will stick with the youngster out there instead of the haphazard Glen Johnsen, with Stephen Warnock coming in at left full.

That would leave Liverpool with a very one-paced back line and with a team whose tactical approach would be very direct, an accusation that the Kop levelled at Roy Hodgson with some venom on more than one occasion.

Is Suarez the right signing at the right time? Because it might even end up causing more questions than answers.

Kenny secures first home win

Kenny Dalglish secured his first home victory in his second spell at the helm as Liverpool beat Fulham 1-0 at Anfield on Wednesday evening. After failing to cap an impressive first-half showing with a goal, the Reds finally took a deserved lead on 52 minutes when visiting defender John Panstil sliced into his own goal after Fernando Torres's deflected effort had struck the post.

Fulham tried in vain to restore parity in the dying stages, but the hosts were able to see out the contest to claim victory.

The result means Liverpool recorded back-to-back Barclays Premier League wins for the first time since November and elevates them up to seventh in the table.

In the build up to the game, an intriguing stat emerged revealing the last time Fulham had visited Anfield with Dalglish as Reds' boss, they returned to London having been on the end of a 10-0 demolition job in a League Cup tie in 1986.

Few were predicting a repeat scoreline prior to kick-off, though, particularly as the Cottagers had ground out goalless draws on each of their last two visits to L4 and journeyed north on the back of a four-match unbeaten run.

Nonetheless, spirits within the Liverpool camp had been buoyed by arguably their most dominant performance of the season so far at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday - and the return of Steven Gerrard from suspension only served to heighten the feel-good factor around dressing room ahead of kick off.

The skipper was instantly restored straight to the starting XI, replacing the injured Lucas Leiva, as Dalglish opted to make one change to the line-up that had excelled at Molineux.

A tepid start greeted the opening exchanges of the contest, but Liverpool did have the ball in the back of the net inside six minutes, only to see the effort chalked off due to offside as Torres raced onto Raul Meireles's pass and slotted beyond David Stockdale.

TV replays, however, suggested perhaps an incorrect decision had been made.

Undeterred, the Reds set about mounting a sustained spell of pressure on the visitors' goal and after Stockdale had tipped Meireles's glance from a Martin Kelly centre around the post, Martin Skrtel headed into the side netting from the resulting corner.

The Fulham stopper had to extend his frame again on 25 minutes, turning Glen Johnson's dipping drive over the bar after the full-back had stormed his way into a shooting position on the edge of the area.

Liverpool were firmly positioned in the driving seat and Mark Hughes's men had rarely ventured into the opposing half - but they did test Pepe Reina twice in quick succession just shy of the 30-minute mark.

First, Clint Dempsey pounced upon a wayward pass from Martin Kelly and drew a block from the Reds' 'keeper with a stinging low drive.

Then, Mousa Dembele spurned a golden chance to put Fulham into the lead, failing to make proper contact with the ball after Andy Johnson's cutback had bobbled into his path at point-blank range and thus enabling Reina to fend away the attempt.

Back came the hosts and only a fine block by Pantsil prevented Maxi Rodriguez's prod reaching goal following Kelly's cross.

With half-time looming, Fulham were still robustly holding on to their clean sheet, although that could have changed had Torres managed to get his header on target from another Kelly delivery.

However, Liverpool eventually broke the deadlock seven minutes after the restart, albeit in somewhat fortunate fashion.

Kuyt's touch deflected a Dempsey pass into the path of Torres, whose turn and shot from the edge of the box ricocheted against Brede Hangeland and onto the base of the post. With Stockdale grounded, Fulham frantically tried to clear under pressure from the lurking Meireles, but Panstil only succeeded in slicing the ball over his own line.

It was no more than the Reds deserved, though the goal did not prove the signal for another spell of concerted pressure from the hosts.

A deflection from Chris Baird on Meireles's pass for Torres following a lightening-fast counter attack proved to be the next time Stockdale was tested, with the No.12 required to divert the ball around the post on 74 minutes.

With time ticking down, Fulham piled forward in search of an equaliser and Aaron Hughes saw a goal-bound header palmed away by Reina on the stretch.

Hangeland rose highest to meet the corner that followed, but the centre-back was left holding his head in his hands as Meireles cleared from off the goalline.

And the Cottagers were left further frustrated when Reina thwarted Dembele after Danny Murphy's free-kick had caused panic in the Liverpool box.

It proved their final chance, however, as the Reds withstood the nervy finale to secure an important three points.

- Match stats:

Liverpool F.C: Reina; Kelly, Agger, Skrtel; Poulsen (Fabio Aurelio 80’), Gerrard, Meireles; Kuyt (Shelvey 66’), Maxi; Torres.

Fulham: Stockdale; Pantsil, Hughes, Hangeland, Baird; Dempsey, Murphy, Sidwell, Duff (Gera 63’); Johnson, Dembélé.

Liverpool reject £40 million bid from Chelsea for striker Fernando Torres

The Spanish international has been linked with a host of clubs over the past 12 months, including Manchester City and Barcelona, but Chelsea have made the first move.

A Liverpool spokesman said last night: "Chelsea have made an offer for Fernando, which has been rejected. The player is not for sale."

Premier League champions Chelsea are believed to have had a £52 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero and defender Diego Godin rejected earlier this week, and have now turned their attentions closer to home.

But having met stiff resistance from the Anfield hierarchy, it remans uncertain whether they will improve their offer for Torres, who has shown signs in recent weeks of returning to his best form.
