News dates for Fulham and Blackpool clash as Boxing Day game is called off

The freezing conditions in the UK continue to cause havoc with Liverpool’s festive fixture list as Sunday’s game at Bloomfield Road became a casualty of the weather.

The decision to call off the match was taken after a pitch inspection was carried out at the Tangerines’ home ground early on Boxing Day morning. The Premier League match away to Blackpool has now been rearranged for Wednesday, 12th January kick-off at 20:00 hours (GMT).

The postponement follows the calling off of Liverpool’s game at home to Fulham which was originally scheduled for December 18. The Premier League confirmed on Boxing Day that the game will now take place on January 26, kick-off at 20:00 hours (GMT).

Weather permitting, Liverpool’s next game will be against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 29 at Anfield.

Manchester City back in for £50m Liverpool star Fernando Torres as replacement for Carlos Tevez - report

Manchester City could be prepared to table a bid of £50 million to bring Liverpool’s star striker Fernando Torres to Eastlands in the January transfer window.

City are desperate to fill the boots of Carlos Tevez after it emerged recently that he wants out of the Manchester club, according to The News of the World.

Torres could be the player whom City manager Roberto Mancini brings in should his Argentine striker leave for pastures new.

An exit clause in the Spanish striker’s contract could force Liverpool to sell if a bid of £50m is tabled.

It is understood that Torres would still prefer a move to Chelsea ahead of City, and that the forward would prefer to wait for the summer, when he would have more time to consider his options.

Though Mancini will be able to out-bid any transfer rivals, with a reported £250,000-a-week package being considered, it is trophies, not financial rewards, that Torres is craving.

The prospect of playing Champions League football is looking ever more doubtful for Liverpool, who have struggled so far this season, and a move away from the Merseyside club could be necessary if the striker wants to play in Europe’s top competition.

City have been pursuing Torres for two years now, seeing a £60m bid for the star rejected 18 months ago.

City’s position in the world of football has strengthened since then and as a result he could be tempted to sign for the club.

Elsewhere in the Premier League Roman Abramovich would have to table a bid reminiscent of his early days at Chelsea should he want to bring the player to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s official line is that Torres is not for sale, though given the striker’s recent form and the club’s current position in the table, a big enough bid could see a parting of the ways that is profitable for all concerned.

Both City and Chelsea could, though, face competition from Barcelona, as it is also reported that the Catalan giants, financially re-invigorated following a lucrative shirt sponsorship deal, are contemplating an £85m summer swoop for both Torres and their long-time target, Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

Torres is currently placed 65th in the Castrol Rankings, while Tevez is 17th and Fabregas 40th.

UEFA offer a Torres masterclass as striker’s trademark turn and shot take centre stage

One of Fernando Torres’ many tricks was the centre of study of UEFA’s Training Ground section on their official website. Their on-line tactical school offered a video of just over four minutes long showing just how the Liverpool number ‘9’ swivels with his back to goal before finding the net with a fierce drive. Arsenal and Inter Milan are just two of the clubs to have been on the receiving end of one of Fernando’s well crafted missiles.

Despite Liverpool playing Europa League football this season, Fernando Torres’ masterclass is part of the Champions League Training Ground from grassroots to the stars.

The strikes at home to the Gunners and at the San Siro against Inter Milan both came during the Reds’ 2007/08 Champions League campaign.

A football coach along with three trainees all analyse the Spaniard’s movement and finish. The striker receives the ball with his back to goal and with several defenders close-by. Torres drops his shoulder right sending the defender the wrong way, before moving the ball onto his right foot and letting fly.

Inter Milan defender Chivu and former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos are the two victims of Torres’ magic. Both players were wrong-footed before the number ‘9’ fired past the opposing keeper with a bullet shot.

Torres returns as Liverpool look to end away day blues

St. James Park will play host to Newcastle Vs Liverpool on Saturday 11 at 17:30 hours (GMT). The Magpies’ stadium has been the perfect hunting ground for the Reds in their last two visits with 3-0 and 5-1 victories; and this weekend the Merseysiders will be hoping to make it three wins in three.

The forward has faced Newcastle on two occasions, scoring one goal. His strike was a gem after dummying the keeper before rolling the ball into an empty net. The pass was from Steve Gerrard, who unfortunately will remain on Merseyside for Saturday’s match.

The Torres-Gerrard partnership will have to wait at least another week as the club captain will miss the trip to St.James Park. Defenders Agger and Carragher will also sit out the Premier League fixture, so manager Roy Hodgson will probably start with Skrtel and Kyrgiakos in the heart of the Liverpool defence.

Liverpool arrive for the weekend match after collecting three comfortable points at home Aston Villa. The victory was the perfect remedy after the Reds lost out to a stoppage-time goal away to Spurs at White Hart Lane.

The defeat against Tottenham was just one more in what has been a difficult season on the road for the Merseysiders, with just the one victory in eight outings. The rest of the encounters have ended in two draws and four losses.

Newly-promoted Newcastle have struggled at home this season with just two wins in eight matches. The nine points from a possible 21 are one of the reasons why the Magpies brought in Alan Pardew to take over the reigns of the club. The former Reading, West Ham, Charlton Athletic and Southampton boss will be looking to end a five game run without a win in his first test against Liverpool.

Despite Newcastle’s poor form in the league, the Magpies have managed to beat Arsenal (1-0), and a fortnight ago they held high-flying Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Following the game at St.James Park, Liverpool will face Utrecht in the Europa League on Wednesday evening. With the Reds already qualified for the next round, the game is a dead rubber and will probably be used by Roy Hodgson to give some fringe squad players a run-out.

Fernando Torres still tops with Liverpool goal king Ian Rush

Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes Fernando Torres can spoil Gerard Houllier's return to Anfield tonight.

Torres has had a difficult season, with low points outweighing highlights, but Rush, who knows a thing or two about scoring goals, is confident the Spaniard will deliver against Houllier's Aston Villa side in what is a crucial Premier League clash.

Torres struck a brilliant brace to beat Chelsea at Anfield last month, but for the most part in this campaign he has looked a shadow of the striker labelled the best in world football just a year ago.

Last weekend's 2-1 defeat at Spurs summed things up.

With Liverpool leading 1-0 Torres raced clear either side of half-time with opportunities to secure a rare away victory for Roy Hodgson's side.

Instead of smacking the ball into the net, as a fully firing Torres would have done, he delayed on both occasions allowing Tottenham to clear.

He who hesitates is lost. That's definitely true of forwards.

Rush was one of the greatest ever, scoring 346 times for Liverpool in two spells in which he and the Merseyside outfit collected trophies galore. He is the ideal man to ask about the form of Liverpool's current number nine.

“In my opinion Fernando Torres is a world class player,” said Rush.

“He's proved that for Liverpool in the past and he showed it against Chelsea earlier this season. What Liverpool need now is for him to do it for the rest of this campaign.

“He had chances against Tottenham and while he didn't take them the good thing was that he was getting in the right areas. I would say that if those chances come along against Aston Villa he will take them.”

Houllier will have to ensure opportunities don't come the way of Torres then.

Like his Liverpool counterpart Hodgson, former Reds boss Houllier is already under pressure at Villa.

“Gerard Houllier was a terrific manager for Liverpool and it will be nice seeing him at Anfield again. I'm sure he will get a great reception from the crowd,” said Rush, who rates a treble in the 80s against Villa as his best hat-trick — and there were quite a few of those to choose from.

“The match with Villa is a big one because it starts off a really busy time running up to Christmas and the New Year so it would be great to win that one and get some momentum going. Villa, though, will think the same thing.”

Liverpool must gain that momentum without their two most influential figures, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who are both injured.

Rush adds: “It is massive blow, not just on the pitch, but in terms of leadership off it. Losing Carra late on at White Hart Lane was vital because if he had been on the pitch I'm sure Tottenham would not have scored their winning goal. He is a great organiser and makes sure people are in the right places and when he is not there he is missed.

“As for Steven Gerrard he is a truly great player so he is a massive loss to the club. Injuries happen in football, however, so now is the time for someone else to take responsibility and see how good they can be.”

Rush was in Belfast on Friday to announce a new Liverpool FC football academy in Northern Ireland. He was also at the impressive new club shop in the city signing hundreds of autographs.

“Liverpool have fans all over the world and here in Northern Ireland there is a big following,” he said.

“They are always making the journey across to Liverpool so it is nice for Liverpool to come to Belfast. The shop is giving something back to the fans and it's no more than they deserve.”

Liverpool vying for a fourth successive home win as Villa visit Anfield

The Merseysiders play host to Aston Villa on Monday night, kick-off at 21:00 hours (GMT), in what is a must-win game for the Reds. Two defeats and one victory in their last three outings have seen Liverpool lose touch with the top teams, but three points at home to the Villains could see the Anfield club move four points off fifth-placed Spurs.

Roy Hodgson will be without Carragher for the Premier League clash, and it’s doubtful that Gerrard will return from the hamstring injury he sustained playing for England against France last month.

Former Red manager Gerard Houllier, who managed Liverpool from 1998-2004 winning six trophies, will be missing key player Ashley Young. The young attacker serves a one match ban after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in Villa’s last league outing.

Fernando Torres, who was rested for the Europa League draw in Bucharest has had seven days to prepare for the match at home to Houllier’s side. Last season the Spaniard scored the winner in the fixture between the two clubs at Villa Park. The last-gasp goal from the forward was his 50th Premier League strike, helping Torres to become the fastest player in the history of Liverpool Football Club to score a half-century of goals: 50 goals in 72 appearances.

The Liverpool number ‘9’ also scored against Aston Villa in the corresponding match at Anfield, but his goal wasn’t enough as the Reds fell to a 3-1 defeat.

The Reds have an excellent record against the Villains with only one defeat in their last 17 meetings in the Premier League. The Birmingham based club’s one victory came on their last visit to Merseyside.

After a promising start to the season, Aston Villa have struggled in recent weeks. They have only won one of their last nine league matches and travel to Merseyside two points behind Liverpool and just two points above third from bottom Wigan.

Aston Villa will also be hoping to bounce back from their Carling Cup quarterfinal knockout at the hands of local rivals Birmingham last Wednesday. Zigic scored the only goal of the game in a fiercely contested derby which saw the Blue-half of the city through to the semis.

Following the match at home to Aston Villa, the Reds travel to the North East to take on Newcastle on December 11.

Torres wins monthly gong

Liverpool's Fernando Torres has been rewarded for his goalscoring performances against Bolton and Chelsea last month with the ESPN PFA Fan's Player of the Month for November.

Torres has struggled in the Premier League this season.
Torres endured a torrid start to 2010-11, struggling for both form and fitness, but the 26-year-old returned to form with a brace in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Chelsea at Anfield.

He followed that with the Reds' only goal in their 1-1 draw away to Wigan and Roy Hodgson expressed his satisfaction with the Spain star after the win over Chelsea.

"I'm pleased with the all-round performance and I'm also pleased that Fernando Torres will get a lot of the plaudits," Hodgson said.

"He's taken more than his fair share of criticism, some of which has been grossly exaggerated and certainly not fully deserved."

Tommy Smith on LFC and Torres: ‘Don’t be so hard on yourself, Fernando’

THERE were a few raised eyebrows at seeing Fernando Torres clean through on goal a couple of times at Spurs, only for him to fluff his lines.

Torres himself looked pretty down and frustrated, which is understandable to a point I suppose.

But my message to one of the best front players ever to have graced Anfield is simple.

‘Forget about it Fernando – and don’t be too hard on yourself.’

The Spaniard’s goal ratio has been phenomenal since he joined us. Coupled with his feel for the club and his desire to win, it has seen him become a massive idol of the Kop in the way the likes of Roger Hunt, Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler also were.

All strikers will miss chances - even strikers as deadly as Torres normally is. But I’d tell him not to beat himself up about it or get too down over missed opportunities.

He can miss 10 chances as far as I’m concerned but if he scores just one that makes the difference, then he’s done great for me.

Right now I’d tell him to keep his head up and just keep going, because his class will tell in the end and he’ll soon be back burying those types of chances, as we’re so used to seeing.

He’ll of course be looking to get his obvious frustrations out of his system on Monday night when Aston Villa arrive.

It will be an emotional return for Gerard Houllier who deserves, and I’m sure will get, a terrific reception from the Kop, given all he did for Liverpool and all he went through trying to get us back to the very top.

We might be without Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher on Monday but I still expect us to put Villa on the back foot and get at them from the off.

If we can create the number of chances we did at Spurs, then I’m confident we will get the result.

I’m perfectly happy to see Gerard Houllier back with a smile on his face at the start of things, but I’ll be even happier to see Fernando Torres with one on his at the end.

Liverpool star scoops November's top award

Fernando Torres marked his return to something like his old form with a two-goal wonder show against Chelsea, and his contribution to the Liverpool cause during November has not gone unnoticed by fans up and down the country.

It’s still a case of ‘work in progress’ for Fernando, but his efforts have earned him the ESPN PFA Fan’s Player of the Month crown.

After his brilliant brace against Chelsea last month, Reds’ boss Roy Hodgson said: “I'm pleased with the all-round performance and I'm also pleased that Fernando Torres will get a lot of the plaudits.

England 2018 'tab' to Fernando Torres

England's bid brought an image of Fernando Torres celebrating a goal.

Prince William, British Prime Minister David Cameron and David Beckham had England's bid for the 2018 World also aims to Spain.

Among the videos that made the British proposal, contained one of the Premiership and there have appeared some players celebrating goals that are not precisely English as Carlos Tevez and Fernando Torres, striker of Spain, England rival to clinch the 2018 World Cup.

It was when David Cameron spoke and acknowledged that the project is "the best facilities," highlighting the stages of London, Manchester or Liverpool, when he projected an image of several players 'reds', including Fernando Torres. The former Atletico Madrid striker comes in divided doses: in play, kicking a door and celebrating a goal. Also leave other players who are not British and Argentine Carlos Tevez, Nani and the Portuguese footballer from Ivory Coast, Drogba, among others.

Indeed, in the video presented by the Spanish Football Federation also appears Fernando Torres celebrating a goal, although in this case with the Spanish national team jersey.

Reds through with Euro draw (1-1)

Milan Jovanovic headed the Reds into a 19th minute lead when he converted Ryan Babel's cross, somewhat against the run of the early play. Steaua drew level on the hour when a rare mistake from Pepe Reina allowed a tame header from Eder Bonfim to roll over the line.

Both sides had chances to win the game, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos coming closest when he cannoned a header against the crossbar.

However, the result was enough to secure a safe passage into the next stage of the competition for Liverpool with a game to spare.

The Reds touched down in the Romanian capital on Wednesday afternoon minus the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Fernando Torres, Raul Meireles, Glen Johnson and Dirk Kuyt.

Instead, Roy Hodgson decided to utilise the depth of his squad ahead of Monday's Barclays Premier League showdown with Aston Villa by naming a youthful travelling party that included teenage defenders Jack Robinson and John Flanagan.

The duo were handed places on the substitutes' bench, but there were starting berths for Danny Wilson, Daniel Pacheco, Jonjo Shelvey and Martin Kelly.

Fit-again Joe Cole and Fabio Aurelio were also drafted into the starting XI, joining Jovanovic, Babel, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Christian Poulsen.

Meanwhile, the boss handed the captaincy to Reina in the absence of Gerrard and Carragher.

Liverpool kicked off knowing a point would be good enough to secure their place in the last 32 of the Europa League with a game to spare, while victory would ensure they'd finish top of the pile in Group K.

Maintaining an unbeaten record in the competition so far this season served as an added incentive for the Reds, who had comprehensively dispatched Steaua 4-1 at Anfield earlier in the tournament.

But the Militarii made a lively opening to the contest, buoyed by an enthusiastic home faithful - the visitors surviving an early scare when Banel Nicolita sprung the offside trap but was unable to beat Reina to an attempted through ball.

Still, Liverpool's goal remained largely untroubled until the 16th minute when Eric Bicfalvi was presented with an excellent headed opportunity inside the six-yard box, but could only power his effort over the crossbar.

But Hodgson's contingent offered a telling instant riposte by taking the lead three minutes later.

It was Jovanovic who started and finished the move, initially twisting and turning his way into space deep inside Steaua territory before laying the ball out to Babel on the right.

A feint from the Dutchman bought him the half yard required to swing in a deep cross, where Jovanovic was on hand to gleefully nod beyond Ciprian Tatarusanu.

Galvanised by breaking the deadlock, Liverpool went close to doubling their lead soon after as Florin Garados misjudged a headed clearance, sending Babel motoring towards goal. His low cross picked out Cole in the centre, but a heavy first touch allowed Steaua to get bodies back into the box and Pacheco eventually dragged a shot well wide.

The goal had visibly knocked the wind from the sails of the Militarii, but after Bicfalvi had struck a volley wide, Bogdan Stancu should have levelled on the stroke of half-time.

Holding off the challenge of Kyrgiakos inside the box, the striker plucked a cross from the air and shoved off the Greek before stabbing an effort way off target as the home fans waited for the net to ripple to ensure Liverpool's lead remained intact heading into the break.

However, much as they did in the opening 45, Steaua started the half strongly and should have restored parity when Geraldo Alves headed into the midriff of Reina from six yards when unmarked.

The centre-back then flashed an aerial effort across the face of goal from a corner just shy of the hour mark as Marius Lacatus's men continue to probe.

The pressure finally told when Bonfim levelled in fortunate circumstances.

Aurelio deflected Nicolita's attempted cross from the right up into the air, allowing Bonfim to head towards goal from 15 yards. His effort appeared to be of no cause for concern to Reina, but an uncharacteristic error from the stopper saw the ball squirm between his legs and over the line.

Nonetheless, only the crossbar prevented Kyrgiakos from restoring Liverpool's lead on 65 minutes as the centre-back crashed a header against the woodwork from Aurelio's corner.

Nicolita then skewed wide for the home side following an attempted clearance by Aurelio failed to reach its intended destination prior to Stancu finding the roof of Reina's net with a curling effort.

Steaua poured forward in search of a winner in the latter stages, but they were unable to breach the Reds' rearguard again.

The scoreline means Liverpool can look forward to more European football in the New Year as the point was enough to guarantee them a place in the Europa League last 32 with a game against Utrecht still to play.
